Major chords include a root (1st), 3rd and a 5th
A 6th is a 1, 3, 5, 6
A Major 7th is a 1, 3, 5, 7
An augmented is a 1, 3, 5#
Minor chords include a 1, 3rd flat, 5
A Minor 7th is a 1, 3rd flat, 5, and a 7th flat.
A Minor 6th is a 1, 3rd flat, 5, 6
Seventh chords include a 1, 3, 5, 7th flat.
A 9th is a 1,3,5, 7th flat, 9
Suspended 7th is 1,4, 5, 7th flat
Diminished chords include a 1, 3rd flat, 5th flat, 6 (double flatted 7th).
Memorize these chord structures!
9ths, 11ths and 13ths:
If we stack a third upon any seventh chord we now have a Ninth Chord. If we stack a third upon any ninth chord we now have an Eleventh Chord. Finally, if we stack a third upon any eleventh chord we now have a Thirteenth Chord. Pretty easy, eh?
